In this occasion we decided not to take a tour and venture out on our own to get to the Acropolis and back.
The port of Athens is in the municipality of Pireaus. Athens is a very busy city with traffic so its better to take the train then taking a taxi.
From the port it was a 15 minute walk to the train station. We walked along the avenue that goes parallel to the port until you reach a bridge that crosses the avenue and there you´ll find the train station. There is only one train to take here (the green line) and we got off at the Monastiraki station. You can also get off at the Acropoli station, but you need to connect with another train to do that. Getting off at Monastiraki is faster and it takes the same time to walk up to the Acropolis.
From the Monastiraki station is about a 20 minute uphill walk to the Acropolis. Its hot and its tiring, but its worth it when you get there...
Arriving to the busy port of Piraeus at sunrise with the Acropolis mountain rising above the city of Athens like a pyramid.
Athens is very busy with crazy traffic jams.
We took the train to Monastiraki station.
The entrance and exit to the Acropolis forms a bottle neck effect and gets very hot and crowded.
The famous Parthenon is the temple of the greek goddess Athena.
Try walking without shoes here. Its like 38 C hot and the marble feels cool.
The Acropolis is full of ruins of the temples of the greek gods.
Have a taste of the local food on the way back.
Getting around Athens to the Acropolis was easy. But you can really get lost from your group if you don´t watch out. So everywhere you stop always set up a meeting point in case you split up, so you can get back to the ship by 13:30.
